What does it mean to be healthy? Many young people are not aware
of the consequences that some decisions might have on their health.
We work with them to help them understand how they can take positive
action and avoid harmful choices.
Young Pioneers is working with young people to
help them live healthier lifestyles, to develop the key skills they
need to improve their well being and take responsibility for their
future health.
We are proactively tackling youth obesity not just from a health
perspective but also from a self esteem perspective. Many young
people find that weight issues lead to depression as well as bullying
from other young people. Our Be Healthy programme is a practical
set of skills that will enable young people to be more confident,
manage their eating habits, and understand how to have a healthy
lifestyle.
As part of this programme we teach young people
how to shop and eat healthily on a budget. We also tackle risky
behaviours such as alcohol abuse, relationships and smoking; to
ensure that they are physically, emotionally and mentally healthy.
Young People most in need of such education are often least likely
to receive it, in many cases such young people are disengaged from
school and have little or no access to advice and support.
To tackle this issue we have raised funds to secure
a mobile teaching unit. Our qualified youth trainers aged 13 –
19 will be visiting other young people in the unit to help understand
how to be healthy.
If you want to train to be a youth health trainer
or participate in a mobile health programme please contact behealthy@youngpioneers.org
