What kind of world do you want?
Enabling young people to "Go Green"
is not just about raising their awareness to issues such as climate
change, it is about empowering them to take action and take responsibility
for the kind of world they want to live in.
The future holds many challenges for young people
and if they are to Go Green they must embrace sustainable development
as a way of thinking. It is not just about recycling bottles, it
is about how they organise their lives both at school and when they
are out meeting with their friends.
We enable young people to Go Green by training
them how to manage their Carbon Footprint. Our accredited award
develops the skills that will lead them into a new way of thinking
and empower them to make appropriate decisions.
A unique aspect of the approach is not just the accreditation, but
the fact that the charity trains young people to be carbon footprint
trainers. Young people training other young people how to make a
difference.
Now when a friend asks a friend for advice about Going Green there
is someone of their own age to go to for advice and support.
The carbon footprint award was designed through
consultation with young people. We asked them what skills they wanted
to learn.
The award explains what a carbon footprint is
and then teaches young people how they can take positive action
to reduce their own, and their families carbon footprint. It is
a skill based course that trains them with practical techniques
such as;
- How to produce a home energy conservation plan
- How and what they can recycle
- Where their local recycling points are
- Where to buy local sustainable foods so that they reduce food
miles
- How to produce a green travel plan for themselves and their
family
The charity is now actively recruiting and
training youth Carbon Footprint Trainers and working in schools
and youth centres, both in the UK and overseas to enable young people
to Go Green.
The charity is also working closely with East Sussex YDS. Together
we are identifying and training targeted young people who will be
working locally to help others manage their carbon footprint.
Enabling your school to Go Green is an opportunity
to involve young people. Our Carbon Detective support programme
involves identifying and training carbon detectives who will help
you monitor and manage your carbon footprint. From school meals
to transport we will train and support your carbon detective team
in school.
