Children & Young People Now Awards
2010
Young Pioneers are delighted to announce that we
have been awarded the Third Sector Engagement Award by the Children
& Young People Now Awards 2010. Our CEO, Luke, has also received
the prestigious Children and Young People’s Champion Award
for having “achieved significant improvements in the lives
of children or young people, especially among disadvantaged or excluded
groups.

The Third Sector Engagement Award
recognizes local authority and community sector partnerships
that have done the most to work with and improve the lives of
children and young people, particularly those in disadvantaged
or hard-to-reach groups.
Working with Rother District Council, Young Pioneers developed
an educational programme called Aspiration Enterprise that targets
young people at risk of becoming what the government terms “NEET“
(Not in Education, Employment or Training). |
Christmas
Market
As the final stage
in their enterprise programme, our young people have been tasked
with
designing, planning and then running a Christmas Market. The
market will take place on Saturday December 11th in Devonshire
Square, Bexhill, from 9am until 5pm.
The team will be making or acquiring and selling food and hot
drinks, books, pre-loved items, silk flowers, and glow products
to name a few. You will even find Santa in his high-tech grotto
with little gifts for everyone! |

10 young people welcomed by their local TESCO store

As the final stage in their Youth
Trainer programme, 10 young people were welcomed by their
local TESCO store where they were tasked with sourcing ingredients
to make a healthy meal on a
budget of just £3! Supported and advised by friendly staff,
the fun and educational day resulted
in the whole team graduating as Youth Lifestyle Trainers. |

Luke Lancaster short listed in the Children and Young
Peoples Champion Category of the Children and Young Peoples Services
Awards
Children and Young People’s Services Awards
celebrate the achievement of the sector and unsung heroes who work
to improve young lives across the UK. The awards are organised by
Children and Young People Now in association with the Children's
Workforce Development Council. This year there was a record 520
entries.
Young Pioneers Charity have been short
listed by NCVYS for their Young Partners Award 2008. It
was a record breaking year for nominations and the charity was visited
by NCVYS who focused on:
- How our young people are involved in all levels of decision
making
- How the contribution of young people are valued
- How young people evaluate projects the are involved in
Luke Lancaster Junior CEO chosen as National
Case Study for Youth Led Innovation
The National Endowment for Science and Technology and the Arts (NESTA)
has commissioned the National Youth Agency and Change Makers to
analyse current practice around youth led innovation. Luke has now
been chosen as a case study by NESTA.
Charity Secure Mobile Training Unit
The Youth Board of Young Pioneers have successfully bid to the Youth
Capital Fund (East Sussex County Council) and have secured funding
for a Mobile Training Unit.
The Unit will be equipped with a conferencing
facility and it will be used to enable delivery to young people.
The unit will be used in schools and rural areas to enable young
people to access services they would otherwise not have access to.
Go Green
Young Pioneers continues to raise its national profile as a leading
education provider for young people in Carbon Footprint Training.
Following the level 2 accreditation of our carbon footprint awareness
award we have been featured in the NCVYS quarterly publication.

a social entrepreneur.

Classroom for Trainers
Thanks to Tesco Charitable Trust Young Pioneers is now able to equip
a state of the art classroom to train youth trainers, These accredited
young people will be working in primary schools to teach other young
people how to stay safe.
Save the Children Fund Stay Safe Delivery
Save the Children are British Gas have funded delivery of accredited
Stay Safe Courses for two primary schools to enable young people
to make the transition to secondary school safely.
William Wates Memorial Trust Fund Interactive
IT Delivery
Following a presentation from Junior CEO Luke William Wates Memorial
Trust have funded the purchase of an interactive touch screen computer.
Using our traffic light safety system in primary schools, children
will be taught interactively by our accredited youth trainers how
to identify dangerous - red, risky – amber, and green - safe,
situations.
We are very pleased to be able to support Young Pioneers
and we wanted to recognise the outstanding work that Luke and the
team are doing. It is inspirational to see young people taking responsibility
for their environment and really making a difference

the development of Young Pioneers helping Young People to reach
a larger audience .

Count Me In
As part of the 11 million takeover day Young Pioneers ran a Count
me In work shadowing experience for young people working with children
service planning groups. Over the day young pioneers shadowed the
police, head teachers, the Youth Offending Team, the teenage pregnancy
unit , and the PCT.
The lessons learnt from this experience will help
to develop and understanding of how young people can participate
in the shaping, procurement and delivery of children’s services.

CSPG Youth Participation
Young Pioneers has secured two 12 month Youth Participation contracts
in East Sussex. The charity is working with Rother and Eastbourne
Children's Service Planning Groups to actively participate in the
shaping, procuring, and delivery of Children’s Services.
Stay Safe: Save the Children
Stay Safe is a core aspect of our work as a charity following the
training of our 10 youth stay safe trainers the charity is now readying
itself to deliver stay safe training in primary schools with the
support of the Police and funding from Save the Children and British
Gas.
Our Mobile Training Team are visiting primary
schools to deliver accredited stay safe awards to year 6 pupils
to prepare them for the transition to secondary school.
The young people will learn how to identify and
manage risk including how to:
- Travel to school safely
- Interact with adults
- Manage their possessions
- Manage conflict
- Interact with teens and street sense
Go Green: Manage your Carbon Footprint
Go Green is a core Young Pioneers project focused on enabling young
people to manage their carbon footprint. Our level 2 accredited
award has been developed by young people for young people. We have
now secured funding to train 250 young people how to mange their
carbon footprint .

Stay Safe Trainers
During summer with funding from the Youth Opportunities Fund, Young
Pioneers trained 10 young people to be Stay Safe Trainers. The young
people were taught presentation and interpersonal skills. They received
input from NSPCC, Samaritans, and the police before taking part
in an outward bound team building exercise. These young people are
now working in primary schools to teach other young people how to
stay safe .

Mobile Training Unit: Youth Trainers
With the success of our Youth Opportunities Fund bid , Young Pioneers
is continuing its work to identify and train Youth Trainers. The
Mobile Training Unit will be visiting schools and Youth Clubs to
carry out training.
